A confirmation from the Marine Corps reveals the crash of a US fighter jet close to a military base in California. The incident involved an F/A-18 Hornet jet, which went down shortly before midnight local time near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar on Thursday. This location is situated approximately 15 miles (24km) away from San Diego.

The current status of the pilot remains uncertain, as search and rescue operations are presently in progress. An official investigation into the matter has been initiated by the Marine Corps.
According to a statement issued by Marine Corps Air Station Miramar on Friday morning, the crash site is situated on government-owned land just east of the base. Thankfully, there have been no indications of damage to property on the ground, as reported by the base.
The search efforts are receiving assistance from personnel and a helicopter dispatched by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, in cooperation with NBC News.
Although the 3rd Marine Corps Aircraft Wing operates from MCAS Miramar, it's worth noting that the aircraft involved in the crash isn't directly affiliated with that unit. However, it was utilizing the base as its operational hub.

The F/A-18 Hornet jets, utilized by both the Marine Corps and the US Navy, serve as versatile all-weather fighter and attack aircraft. These aircraft were first introduced for service with the Marines in 1983, followed by deployment in the Navy the subsequent year.
In reflecting on past incidents, it's important to remember that in 2012, a Navy F/A-18 crashed into an apartment complex in Virginia Beach, Virginia, leading to injuries sustained by seven individuals. Furthermore, in 2008, an F/A-18 from Miramar was involved in a crash within a residential area in San Diego, tragically resulting in the loss of four lives on the ground. Fortunately, the pilot ejected and survived the incident.
